They havetasted one defeat in three League One outings since the 2-1 loss at the hands of hosts Derby County.

Barnsley are aiming to make it one defeat in four gamesthis weekend when they take on Sheffield Wednesday. The Owls will play hosts to Barnsleyin a league encounter billed for Hillsborough on Saturday afternoon with the visitors hoping to avoid defeat at least to extend their league run.

Derby County were the last team to inflict a league defeat on Barnsley as reported earlier via a 2-1 scoreline before the run of one defeat in three games started. Derby County and Barnsley dropped into League One from the English Championship at the end of last season alongside Peterborough United. ConorMaccarthy put through theBarnsley net for the first Derby County goal in the eighth minute before it was doubled by Nathaniel Mendez-Laing ten minutes from the half-time interval. Josh Benson pulled one back for Barnsley on 64 minutes to setup a grandstand final quarter of the game. In the end, Derby County held on to take the win.

Barnsley recovered from the league defeat at Derby County with the big win over Bristol Rovers. The Tykes ran out 3-0 winners at home to Bristol Rovers with the aforementioned Benson getting one of the goals. He scored the third Barnsley goal in the second half to wrap up the game. It must be pointed out that there was just one goal in the second half of the game. The Bristol Rovers game was followed by the 3-0 loss to Wycombe Wanderers in the league. They were then eliminated from the EFL Cup at the second round stage by Premier League side Leeds United via a 3-1 scoreline.

The defeats against Wycombe Wanderers and Leeds United was followed by the 2-2 draw at Ipswich Town for Barnsley. Their last game was against Lincoln City in the group stage of the Football League Trophy and it ended in a 3-0 home loss for the Tykes who also finished the game with ten men.

BLACKBURN APPOINT EX-BARNSLEY COACH AS NEW ASSISTANT MANAGER https://www.tykesblog.net/blackburn-appoint-ex-barnsley-coach-as-new-assistant-manager/ Sat, 04 Jun 2022 01:50:09 +0000 https://www.tykesblog.net/?p=237 Mark Burton, who helped oversee the development of John Stones during a 10-year spell with Barnsley, has been appointed as Rovers’ Under-23s assistant manager. It will be the first time that Rovers have had an assistant manager at Under-23s level since the departure of David Dunn in 2018, with Burton to work alongside Mike Sheron.

Burton will leave his position within Notts County’s Academy to take up the role at Rovers ahead of the 2022/23 season. He will work alongside Sheron who was appointed as Under-23s boss, stepping up from the same position with the Under-18s, following the departure of Billy Barr to Salford City last summer.

Sheron and Burton both worked on their UEFA A licence badges at the same time and will work with Rovers’ crop of promising youngsters who secured another season of Premier League 2 football with an impressive second half of the season. Burton spent 10 years with Barnsley, before moving to Rotherham United and Notts County, but will make the move into a Category One Academy set-up with Rovers.

Having played for hometown club Barnsley in the early 1990s, Burton’s playing career was cut short by injury. He moved into coaching and worked within the Barnsley Academy, helping oversee the development of the likes of Manchester City and England star Stones, Everton defender Mason Holgate and Luton Town’s James Bree.

Burton had a caretaker spell in charge of the Reds, and worked alongside current Sheffield United boss Paul Heckingbottom. Although Rovers haven’t had a full-time assistant since 2018, Damien Johnson, Barr and Sheron have all had coaches work alongside them on matchdays in recent season. But Burton will be the first appointment in that role since Dunn opted to leave in 2018 after winning the Premier League 2 Division Two title.

FULHAM PREVIEW AHEAD OF MATCH AGAINST BARNSLEY https://www.tykesblog.net/fulham-preview-ahead-of-match-a/ Wed, 16 Mar 2022 11:11:11 +0000 https://www.tykesblog.net/?p=234 Fulham and Barnsley lock horns in their next Championship fixture and we take a review of the Craven Cottage side ahead of the clash. This Saturday sees the second of three consecutive home fixtures for the Reds, as they entertain the Cottagers at Oakwell in a 12.30pm kick-off.

The first happened in midweek when Poya Asbaghi saw his side denied at the death by Stoke City whose 95th minute leveller prevented Barnsley from recording three successive wins on home soil.

It wasn’t a classic game by any stretch of the imagination on Tuesday night. Neither side were particularly impressive. But the visitors probably fashioned the better openings and deserved at least the point they received thanks to that late, late Lewis Baker strike. The Reds weren’t lacking in effort, but the quality shown in recent fixtures at Hull and then here against Middlesbrough wasn’t as clear to see in a game that saw us offer little in terms of cohesion in and around the final third.

But there was certainly one moment of magic. That came about when Domingos Quina scored a superb solo goal, another rocket in front of the adoring Ponty End. The on-loan man wasn’t at his personal best, but he has that ability to conjure up something special, and it was a goal good enough to win any game of football.

Sadly for Barnsley, the Potters kept hammering at the Reds door, which had retreated further and further back, before halfway through nine added minutes for stoppages, Baker was on-hand to curl home another finely executed finish after Barnsley had made a hash of clearing their lines.

That one moment could well prove to be one that we look back on at the end of the season. It genuinely felt like Barnsley had lost at full-time, something that Asbaghi and his captain, Mads Andersen both later stated in their respective post-match interviews.

BARNSLEY: STOKE CITY GAME CALLED OFF https://www.tykesblog.net/barnsley-stoke-city-game-called-off/ Tue, 25 Jan 2022 06:22:01 +0000 https://www.tykesblog.net/?p=232 English Championship strugglers Barnsley won’t be in action on Boxing Day after their game against Stoke City on Boxing Day was called off due to Covid-19. To this effect, Barnsley will have almost two weeks of rest before their next game against Blackburn Rovers on Wednesday.

Barnsley were last in action last week Friday during the goalless draw with West Brom. The away game against Blackburn Rovers next week Wednesday would be the final game of the year for Barnsley.

As things stand on the English Championship standings, Barnsley are deep in trouble as one of the three teams in the relegation zone. The Tykes have recorded just 14 points from 23 games in the Championship this season and they are seven points from safety at the halfway stage of this season. Barnsley need to start winning games if they want to get themselves out of the relegation zone. The Tykes will need to win games in the English Championship if they don’t want to find themselves in League One next season.

In a related development, Hull City are one of the teams battling relegation in the English Championship alongside Cardiff City, Peterborough United, Reading, Derby County and Barnsley. Hull City are keen to sign 20-year-old defender Bryan Reynolds from Italian Serie A capital club AS Roma ahead of the January transfer window. Reynolds is highly regarded at AS Roma though he has played just one league game for the club this season. His signing could boost the Tigers in the bid to avoid demotion to League One after one season in the Championship.

Also, Nottingham Forest starlet Brennan Johnson is attracting the interest of several teams in the Premier League. Merseyside giants Everton are keen to sign Johnson in a £20m deal. Everton are not the only Premier League team interested in Nottingham Forest starlet Johnson. Apart from the Toffees, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur are also keen on signing him.

BARNSLEY EYEING WILLIAMS AS POTENTIAL JANUARY SIGNING https://www.tykesblog.net/barnsley-eyeing-williams-as-potential-january-signing/ Mon, 27 Sep 2021 06:33:24 +0000 https://www.tykesblog.net/?p=230 https://pbs.twimg.com/media/E9ejWWhWEAQTk6a.jpg

Manchester United defender Brandon Williams may currently be away from the club (on a temporary basis) but it looks like clubs are already queuing to snap him up in January, according to the latest reports. The young defender is famed for his versatility and although his natural position is the left-back position, he can play as a right-back and in central defense as well.

He has so been able to acquire some experience while playing for United under manager Olé Gunnar Solksjaer since he was handed his professional debut by the Norwegian boss. He impressed in his debut season when United had slight injury problems and a lack of options in that area and that’s how his career started.

With more games he played for the Red Devils, Williams began to grow in confidence and was getting more game time and more experience as well. However, he would have his place in the United team under serious threat after the club bought Brazilian international star Alex Telles from Portuguese League side FC Porto. After Olé found out that it has become even more difficult for the young E gland international star to make the starting team, it was then decided that he wiukd have to go out on loan.

Norwich City offered him an escape route at Old Trafford and all the parties involved reached an agreement for the transfer to be made. But even though he is currently owned by Manchester United and plays for Norwich, Williams has reportedly attract the interest of Barnsley. The English club have expressed their interest in signing Williams in January and even though it may be hard, United may finally decide to sell the player before completing a potential permanent transfer away from the club.

The Hornets are back in the Premier League after a solitary season in the English Championship. Watford secured a place amongst the big boys of English football in the Premier League by finishing second in the Championship last season. Second position earned Watford automatic promotion to the Premier League.

Perica, 25, is surplus to requirements at Watford and he has been linked with a move to Barnsley. Barnsley are looking to bolster their attacking options ahead of the new season. The Tykes would be keen to build on the successes of last season where they reached the Championship playoffs before they were beaten by Welsh team Swansea City in the semi-finals.

The interest of Barnsley in Stipe Perica was revealed by media outlet The Athletic.

Perica signed for Watford last summer. He joined the Hornets from Italian Serie A outfit Udinese and the attacker went on to score once in 18 games as Watford secured automatic Premier League promotion under manager Xisco Munoz.

Watford attacker Perica started his career at Zadar in his native Croatia before signing for Premier League giants Chelsea in 2013. Perica spent three years at Stamford Bridge but he was not close to making an appearance for the first team. From his three years at Chelsea, Perica spent two years at NEC Breda in the Dutch league.

Perica moved from Chelsea to Udinese whom he scored 11 goals for in 71 games before leaving the Italian Serie A team for Watford. He had loan spells at Italian team Frosinone, Kasimpasa of Turkey and Belgian team Royal Excel Mouscron before signing for the Hornets.

BARNSLEY APPROACH UNITED OVER YOUNGSTER TRANSFER https://www.tykesblog.net/barnsley-approach-united-over-youngster-transfer/ Tue, 15 Jun 2021 12:16:35 +0000 https://www.tykesblog.net/?p=223 Lower-division side Barnsley Football Club have asked English Premier League giants Manchester United over the possibility of taking their youngster, Anthony Elanga on loan for next season, according to reports. The Manchester Evening News reported earlier in the week that Barnsley want the young striker to come into the club and improve their attack and they have now reportedly made a huge step forward by approaching his parent club if he is available to be loaned out.

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EEXa1sJXsAAtzz5.jpg

Elanga has been a shining star for the United under-20 team this season and has been one of their best players. He also impressed first-team manager Olé Gunnar Solksjær who handed the 18-year-old his first-team debut in the Premier League in United s final game in the league against Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Molineux Stadium. Elanga scored in the game, his very first with the senior team and he will be looking forward to getting more minutes with the first team next season.

However, Barnsley could have other plans for him and they have confirmed their intentions about him after requesting the Red Devils‘ permission over taking him on loan. Elanga is still very young but has shown that under the right management, he could mature into being a deadly striker in the future. He has a sheer pace both on and off the ball, is skillful, can win aerial duels, and also has a powerful strike in his boots.

Manchester United have not yet responded to Barnsley’s request and are expected to turn down the offer as Solksjær has expressed his desire to keep the striker around the first team next season. However, for the sake of his development, a summer loan move could be on the cards, and Barnsley could be his destination ahead of the 2021-22 football season.

Top clubs are not the only ones looking forward to the window though, as clubs in other leagues and divisions also already making plans for the players they will be signing in the summer. One of those clubs are Barnsley, and they’ve ready started making plans on the players they will be signing, including creating a list of top transfer targets they believe can take the club to the next level.

According to reports, the club have put Swindon Town midfielder, Scott Twine, on top of their summer transfer wish list and will reportedly go all out to have him signed in the summer. The attacking midfielder is said to be heading a list created by Barnsley as possible summer transfer targets, even though he has been linked with a couple of other clubs, including Peterborough, Burnley, and Queens Park Rangers.

The 21-year-old is said to be interested in a move away from Swindon but is yet to make a decision on which club he wants to join in the summer, and he is reportedly going to take the next few weeks to try and be sure of where he will be playing next season.

Twine is currently enjoying his football this current campaign and has been a shining star for Swindon in the EFL as well. In just 19 league games so far this season, the midfielder has scored 6 goals and recorded 7 assists, taking his goal contribution tally to 13 in just 19 games. A player of his quality and talent would be needed by any team and Barnsley are currently trying to make sure they are that team.

BARNSLEY MANAGER GIVES UPDATE ON ALEX MOWATT AMID RUMORS https://www.tykesblog.net/barnsley-manager-gives-update-on-alex-mowatt-amid-rumors-2/ Wed, 17 Feb 2021 07:32:03 +0000 https://www.tykesblog.net/?p=218 Barnsley boss ValérienIsmaël has insisted that he feels good about the whole situation after fresh reports emerged linking his midfielder Alex Mowatt with a move away from the club to the Championship. Mowatt is entering into the final year of his contract and while he is yet to put pen to paper on a new contract, reports have been swirling around about him potentially leaving the club.

Mowatt, 25, has featured in as many as 24 appearances for Barnsley in the Championship so far this season and has impressed with some eye-catching displays that have seen him score four goals already. He is currently one of the best central midfielders in the division and his delay in signing a new deal with Barnsley has seen other clubs circle him as they look to pounce on the situation.

Earlier this month, reports emerged that two unnamed Championship clubs were eyeing a transfer for Mowatt and reportedly engaged in a bidding war for the midfielder. The reports then claimed that at least two bids were already put on the table but that the club’s bosses turned down the offers immediately.

Now, Millwall have reportedly joined the race to snap up Mowatt from Barnsley after they made inquiries and asked if the player was up for sale. Again, their advancements were rejected, and they have not made any more offers since then. Transfer expert Doug O’Kane, who provides transfer updates and other news concerning Barnsley via the Barnsley Chronicles recently revealed that head coach Valérien is insisting that he is remaining calm on the situation and is very comfortable.

According to O’Kane, the Barnsley manager also said that he has a good feeling and is sure Mowatt will remain at the club beyond the current transfer window.
